 "Afternoon on a Hill"

I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.

I will look at cliffs and clouds
With quiet eyes,
Watch the wind bow down the grass,
And the grass rise.

And when lights begin to show
Up from the town,
I will mark which must be mine,
And then start down!

"There seem to be but three ways for a nation to acquire wealth. The first is by war, as the Romans did, in plundering their conquered neighbors. This is robbery. The second by commerce, which is generally cheating. The third by agriculture, the only honest way, wherein man receives a real increase of the seed thrown into the ground, in a kind of continual miracle, wrought by the hand of God in his favor, as a reward for his innocent life and his virtuous industry."- Benjamin Franklin

The picture is of various greens that I just harvested out of our garden today. It's the 11th of January with 41 degrees temp., which feels like a tropical heat wave considering the -9 degrees this past week. I have a cloth over 2 4x8 beds and the other beds are various sizes with different amount of Remay over them. Some have only 1 layer while others had up to 4 layers. What I noticed that each were producing well! All but the 2 4x8 beds had snow piled on top of them and yet they are growing and thriving. Amazing! It's so inspiring to know that I can and will continue to grow various greens, onions, lettuce for my family, so that we can have the most nutritious foods throughout the winter months.
